How it's calculated

Category amount = total × category share (default shares are editable placeholders). Cost per guest = total ÷ guests.

Common mistakes

FAQ

Where do the percentages come from?

They are a simple default for planning, not survey averages. Change them in the free template to match your priorities.

Why a 10% buffer?

Last-minute costs and fees appear in almost every event budget.

Biggest lever?

Guest count – venue and catering scale with it.

How much does the average wedding cost?

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study reported an average of $34,000 and a median of $24,000 for US weddings in 2025. Costs vary a lot by state and guest count.

How do I lower the cost per guest?

Choose a weekday or off-season date, a buffet or family-style meal, a limited bar and a shorter guest list.

Should the engagement ring be in the budget?

Most couples pay for it separately. Our default includes 5% for wedding bands; set it to 0 if you bought them already.
