How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the amount from the price tag or receipt.
  2. Enter the combined sales tax rate where you shop (state plus local).
  3. Choose whether the amount is before tax or already includes tax.
  4. Read the tax and the total, or the pre-tax price. The table compares state base rates.

Worked example

With amount $250, sales tax rate 7.25%, the amount is: before tax – add tax:

Total with tax: $268.13
Sales tax $18.13 at 7.25% · pre-tax $250.00 · total $268.13

How it's calculated

Add tax: tax = price × rate; total = price + tax. Remove tax: pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate); tax = total − pre-tax price.

Sales tax at common rates

Tax added at three rates, and the pre-tax price when 7.25% is already included:

AmountTax at 6%Tax at 7.25%Tax at 9%Pre-tax if 7.25% is included
$25$1.50$1.81$2.25$23.31
$100$6.00$7.25$9.00$93.24
$250$15.00$18.12$22.50$233.10
$500$30.00$36.25$45.00$466.20
$1,200$72.00$87.00$108.00$1,118.88

On a $1,200 laptop the difference between a 6% and a 9% combined rate is $36. If a total already includes 7.25% tax, divide by 1.0725 – do not just subtract 7.25%.
